Ribadesella, Spain
The town of Ribadesella is located at the mouth of the Sella River, from which it takes its name. It is undoubtedly one of the most unique towns in Asturias due to its shape. In fact, Ribadesella is divided into 2 parts, connected by a bridge, around the port. On one side, the old town (classified as a historical site), on the other the Tito Bustillo Cave (known for its rock art). All around Ribadesella, there are green mountains that contrast with the fine sandy beaches and the turquoise water of the sea, even in bad weather!
We advise you to spend at least half a day in Ribadesella to fully enjoy the town and soak up the atmosphere that prevails there.
The Hermitage of La Guía This small 16th-century chapel is located on the tip of a ridge and offers a spectacular view. The perfect place to contemplate the town of Ribadesella, the nearby cliffs, and the Cantabrian Sea as far as the eye can see.
These 6 large ceramic panels, created by Mingote, trace the local history. They are located on the waterfront, in continuity with the port.
Around a corner, you can discover the Torre de la Atalaya, a 19th-century watchtower. It was built on the remains of an ancient medieval defense tower.
Located in the heart of Ribadesella's old town, the Santa María Magdalena church is characterized by the 2 towers on its main facade. In the middle of these, the image of Christ is found. Inside, one can observe the 4 immense murals by the Uría Aza brothers.
We loved strolling through the various colourful houses alleys of Ribadesella's historic centre.
Commissioned by the city of Ribadesella to make it a tourist attraction, the Painted Staircase is the work of local artist Jonathan Hevia. Paris succeeds because it quickly became the most photographed place in Ribadesella due to its originality. This colorful staircase of 56 steps connects Trasmarina Street to Villar y Valle Avenue.
Personally, we weren't charmed by the place, but it's pleasant to discover the colorful streets around.
Santa Maria Beach, one and a half kilometers long, is a unique beach in the region. In fact, located at the mouth of the Sella, it is bordered by both the ocean and the river while being surrounded by the surrounding mountains. This gives it a crescent shape that can be observed from the different viewpoints of Ribadesella. That day, despite the gray weather and a few drops of rain, we were able to observe some people trying out surfing.
The Ermita de la Guía is a must-see during a visit to Ribadesella.
The Ribadesella viewpoint is located on the path as you ascend from the village to the Ermita de la Guía.
Located just above Tito's Cave, the Ardines viewpoints offer a magnificent view of the Ribadesella village. After parking at the entrance to the Moria recreational area, you can follow the various paths that will take you to the 3 viewpoints.
We managed to park for free near the old town of Ribadesella, along the river. Google Maps reference here or here. If you can't find a space, the Aparcarfacil site lists all available parking in Ribadesella.
We spent a good half-day visiting Ribadesella and discovering its viewpoints. This small coastal town can be a good base for one or more nights to discover the surrounding area, enjoy good addresses or simply enjoy the seaside lifestyle.
Moreover, feel free to be inspired by our itinerary in the Asturias to discover what to do in the surrounding area.
