Llanes, Spain
Llanes is a beautiful port town located just a few kilometers from Ribadesella. This medieval coastal town is built around its port, which was for a long time its main activity.
Besides its historical heritage, Llanes is also known for its natural setting and its many still-wild beaches.
Dating from the 20th century, the Casino de Llanes is an important venue of the former high bourgeoisie and a prime example of the Indiana architecture style. The influences of Indiana architecture come from the United States, where several Spaniards made their fortune before returning to their homeland. Today, it has been converted into a cultural venue.
The town of Llanes still has some vestiges of the Middle Ages: a wall over 300 meters long and the Castle Tower. Built in the 13th century, this medieval tower was a zone of vigilance and defense.
A few meters from the Castle Tower, one finds the Basilica of Santa Maria. This is one of the few Gothic-style religious buildings in the region. Following a request from the city of Llanes, its construction began in the 13th century and finished around the 15th century.
The port of Llanes offers one of the most beautiful postcards of the city. A small tip, you have to come during high tide to see it filled with water and fall in love with it.
The memory cubes are a series of colorful concrete blocks that form the breakwater of Llanes port. Created by the artist Augustín Barrola, they honor the memory of the artist, the memory of art, and the memory of the city.
Over time, the colors of the concrete blocks have become increasingly pale. It's not considered a great success and the work, while original, doesn't match the historical atmosphere of the town of Llanes.
From the port, we advise you to go to the Llanes lighthouse located on Punta de San Antón. The lighthouse itself is not spectacular, but it offers a view of several tourist attractions. You can find the famous Llanes letters, with the Cubos de la Memoria in the background.
A little further to the right, you access a panorama of Puerto Chico beach, one of the city's flagship beaches.
We managed to park easily and for free in the C. Egidio Gavito in Llanes. Located a short walk from the Casino and a 5-minute walk from the port, it's the perfect place to park and visit the town of Llanes
The small port town of Llane is a **good starting point** for exploring the surrounding area and enjoying the most beautiful beaches of Asturias. The atmosphere must be magical when the sun sets and the lights of the houses light up along the port.
