Elounda, Greece
Crete, a Greek island between the Mediterranean Sea and the Libyan Sea, is perfect for all water activities: snorkeling, diving, boat trips, etc. During our stay, we decided to rent a boat without a license from Boat Rental Elounda for a whole afternoon.
This allowed us to discover the bay of Elounda from the sea, sail around the famous island of Spinalonga (which hosted exiled lepers at the beginning of the 20th century), and swim in the turquoise waters. An unusual activity that offers you a lot of freedom. Let's go, Captain!
For this first experience, we went to Boat Rental Elounda | Petros watersports which offers several types of boats and water activities. Their fleet consists of 4 boats without a license and a slightly larger boat, which requires a license or a skipper.
When we arrive, we are warmly welcomed. No time is wasted, we get straight to the point: we receive some navigation rules (where we are allowed to navigate, how many meters from the shore, where we can drop anchor, etc.) as well as suggested itineraries with the various points of interest in the Elounda lagoon. Language is no barrier, as explanations are also available in French.
Located on the northeastern coast of Crete, the Elounda Bay is a peaceful little paradise with its crystal-clear waters and its fine sandy beaches. It is a popular destination for travelers seeking comfort as it is on this part of the island that one finds the most luxurious hotels in Crete. Nevertheless, the region remains rich in its culture and nature.
We begin our journey by circling Spinalonga Island, easily recognizable by its fortress. The island is also known as the leper island. It housed exiled patients for about fifty years until the end of their lives. We advise you to read the novel "The Island of the Forgotten" by Victoria Hislop, which will allow you to learn more about this dark period.
We are not allowed to dock with our small boat without a permit at the port of Spinalonga. The best option is to visit the island before or after renting the boat by taking the ferry from Plaka.
The sea being more turbulent in this location, we return to the bay and enjoy this magnificent view that is Elounda Bay with its turquoise waters and the mountains in the background. In the distance, we see some schools of fish shimmering and flying above the waves.
We drop anchor in one of the small coves. We put on our swimsuits and dive (or rather jump) into the water. It is quite salty but its temperature is perfect for cooling off on this beautiful mid-September day. We then savor the calm of the bay and the sun's rays caressing our skin.
Time passes without us realizing it, and the 4-hour rental comes to an end. It's time to head to the small port of Boat Rental Elounda at the foot of the Marina Beach Hotel and conclude this idyllic day.
The rental price of your permit-free boat will depend on the duration and engine power. At Boat Rental Elounda, prices start at 70€ for one hour of rental with a 25-HP boat. For 4 hours (half a day), prices start from 170€. A very reasonable budget to rent a permit-free boat, knowing that each boat can accommodate up to 5 people.
Fuel, third-party insurance, and VAT are included in all prices.
🕑 Opening Hours: from 10am to 7pm.
💰 Prices: you can find the rental prices on the website of Elounda Boat Rentals.
