Arromanches, France
Are you wondering what to do and see in Arromanches-les-Bains during a stay in Normandy, France? We discovered this seaside resort during our road trip along the D-Day beaches of Normandy, at the beginning of autumn. This town owes its fame to its artificial port, whose remains can still be visited today. We give you in this blog post our must-sees in Arromanches. We hope you enjoy your stay there.
Discover the remains of the artificial port of Arromanches-les-Bains, a major historical site of the Normandy landings. These remains, witnesses of Operation Mulberry B, recall the exceptional ingenuity and logistics employed by the Allies in 1944. Pre-fabricated in England, the concrete elements of the artificial port were transported across the English Channel to enable the crucial landing of troops, ammunition, and equipment necessary for the liberation of Europe.
We were able to observe the remains of the Phoenix caissons and other elements of the artificial port, which are revealed when the tide is low, during a walk on Arromanches beach.
The Landing Museum is a must-see on the Normandy D-Day beaches. Recently renovated, it reopened in April 2023 with a brand new layout. It traces the different phases of the landing as well as the construction of the Arromanches artificial port through models, archive films, photos and projections.

We connected Arromanches from Bayeux by electric bike. A guided tour by Hugo, a guide at Petite Reine Normandie and passionate about his native region, which passes through some of the essential sites of the Landing and the Norman countryside. On the program of this bike ride: the Bayeux English Cemetery, the village of Vaux-sur-Aure or even the German batteries of Longues-sur-Mer. The arrival in Arromanches offers us a splendid panorama, with cliffs on one side and the small town of Arromanches on the other.
This activity away from the tourist bustle was a favorite for us. Thank you to Hugo for sharing his passions: Normandy and cycling. We hope to return and discover other iconic places in the region by bike!
We stayed one night at the Hรดtel de la Marine which is located on the seawall. The room is small, but well-designed. The extra: the **view of the sea** and the remains of the artificial port of Arromanches.
Favorite address for eating a traditional fish & chips. The menu is simple and homemade. Perfect for a quick lunch.
Located on the waterfront, the La Marine restaurant offers an incredible setting with its sea view. In the evening, the soft lighting transforms the room into an intimate and romantic atmosphere. You can find on the menu dishes made with fresh, local seafood. There are also meat dishes and options for vegans/vegetarians.
