Verlaine, Belgium

Berta Tiny House, a unique overnight accommodation in Belgium.

22 March 2024

Want to disconnect from your daily routine and spend a night in nature in Belgium? We've found the **unique accommodation** for you! A **tiny house less than an hour from Brussels**, in the heart of nature. So, shall we go? A change of scenery is guaranteed.

A night at Berta's, an unusual accommodation in Liège

Located in Verlaine, Liège province, Berta is a self-built tiny house by Julien. He started the project during his studies in 2020 during the pandemic and finished it 4 years later. Open for bookings since late February, we are therefore among the first tenants to have the chance to sleep in this beautiful little wooden cabin.

Our unusual stay in the Tiny House Berta

After almost an hour's journey from Brussels, we arrive in the village of Verlaine located in the province of Liège. It is at the address we received previously by message that we find Julien. He leads us to the tiny house located on a beautiful grassy plot, facing the meadows that welcome the cows in the summer.

The interior of the Tiny House Berta

We follow the Japanese steps up to the large wooden terrace of the tiny house and push open the door of this lovely little house. We enter a bright living room with 2 armchairs, a small stove, and a dining table with 2 stools. On our left, a minimalist and very well-equipped kitchen (refrigerator, sink, cooktop, coffee maker, kettle, microwave, etc.). You'll even find the essentials for cooking, such as oil, salt, pepper, and some spices.

At the back of the tiny house, behind the sliding door, we find the shower (with hot water) and the composting toilet.

Upstairs, we have a large double bed, still with a panoramic view of the outdoors.

You can come with peace of mind for this restorative getaway, as sheets and towels are provided on site.

The exterior of the Tiny House Berta

As mentioned above, the exterior of the tiny house consists of a large wooden terrace. The fire pit is located a few meters away on the grass, promising a romantic evening warmed by the flames of the wood fire.

Spring is proving elusive at the end of March, and we will only be able to enjoy these exteriors very little between showers. We have promised ourselves to return for a whole weekend this summer to fully enjoy the outdoors!

The next morning

What a joy to wake up, open the curtains, and enjoy this view of nature. A true moment of contemplation before going downstairs to relight the stove to warm up the tiny house after this peaceful night.

We prolong this sweet romantic stay by preparing pancakes for breakfast. By the way, for the most gourmands, we're including our recipe below.

Our recipe for delicious and fluffy pancakes

🥞 Ingredients: 250 gr of flour, 8 gr of baking powder, 2 eggs, 300 ml of milk (cow's or plant-based), 20 gr of sugar (and a sachet of vanilla sugar), 65 gr of melted butter and a pinch of salt.

🧑‍🍳 Recipe steps: 1. Mix the flour, baking powder, sugar and pinch of salt in a large bowl. 2. Add the egg yolks and melted butter to the mixture. 3. Gradually add the milk to the bowl until a smooth batter is formed. 4. Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form and gently fold them into the batter. 5. Time to cook the pancakes.

How to heat a tiny house?

Despite the cool outside temperatures, we didn't get cold at all during our stay in the tiny house. In addition to a wood-burning stove, Julien equipped the tiny house with electric heating. So no worries if we couldn't get the fire going!

During our stay with Berta, we only used the wood-burning stove for heating, and it was more than enough. Even though you'll agree, it was rather cool waking up, just the time it took to relight the fire after our night.
